Calaboose Museum (TX)
Hello Quilt Friends.... here's what I learned this weekend as a genealogy spin-off!
The Calaboose African American History Museum (CAAHM) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit museum in San Marcos, Texas. CAAHM was founded in 1997 by Mrs. Johnnie Armstead to collect, preserve, and interpret authentic African American artifacts related to San Marcos and Hays County history.
The purpose of the organization is to inform and educate all citizens about the many accomplishments, contributions and experiences of African Americans in San Marcos and Hays County.

Rendering/Artistic Quilts
Though it’s faintly drawn in pencil…. This Chillis my aunties most pensive, thoughtful look. Go figure— a young woman often treated badly here in Oklahoma!
It’s my favorite photo ! First step to a quick SAQA quilt entry 2024-

Kawandi Quilting is Old and New
My ohhhh my. Something to learn!!! Let me share from a fellow blogger…..
Kawandi quilting is from Western India and Pakistan, but it was brought there by immigrants from Africa. These Africans, called Siddis, introduced the kawandi quilts to India.
Kawandi are made from small pieces of fabric. They are not not patchwork quilts like we make in America, but an appliqué type. Each little piece, called a tikeli, is sewn onto the backing fabric using long straight stitches. A layer of batting or fabric is laid in between the top and bottom layers to make the quilt thicker.

No Stress Quiltin’
Quilting is a Stress-Reliever
The soothing rhythm of stitching and the tactile experience of fabric can help to alleviate the pressures of daily life. The repetitive cutting of fabrics and putting each piece together divert our attention to the present moment, create a mindful focus towards our actions, and promote relaxation.

Snooping Around for A Call for Submissions
This is something I have diligently done for years. In the back pages of a favorite magazine... a link to a Quilting Guild in the African American big city festivals or Museums featuring an idea that I can materialize into a QUILT
There is a museum just waiting for me to "CURATE" another quilt exhibit in Logan County in Guthrie, Oklahoma.... a must do on my list of things to do.
Did I mention my age-old dream of documenting quilts in the Black communities/indviduals who quilt!!!
Just a fun thought for today..... I'll come back to this post to fill in a bit more of my day-dreams

String Quilt: Soaring On
Earlier Post of first 16 square (measure 7 1/2 inches) is now up to almost 60 squares. Hmnnn. Nine Across and Six down…
Friend said… what’s this quilt for? Yep it’s groaned over filling this wonderful 10 x 10’ Studio space. It’s really a cozy-Clive fit—-enveloping my senses and my soul as I see!!!! Luv it!!!
I answered: it’s mindless stitching! It’s a moment to straight stitch and plan out the bigger issues in my day—-my called—my life!!
I’m really feeling this age thing…. In view of two older brothers. Death Sorrow and loss all around. An Election of 2024 -November 04
So. I quilt!

Serious Images: 55 years ago
I visited with my brother who graduated HS in 1968
He’s a marked man….. remarkable also! The year was tumultuous…. And here I am transferring parts of my heart and souls into fabric art!! I’m satisfied with work of 2023 (HIGH CRAFT EXHIBIT)
On 16 October 1968, two black US athletes – Tommie Smith and John Carlos – stood on the podium at the Mexico City Olympics, heads bowed. They wore black socks with no shoes; Smith wore a black scarf around his neck. As the US national anthem played, they each raised a black-gloved hand in silent protest.
Although no words were spoken, the moment was full of meaning. Smith, who had won gold in the 200m, setting a new world record, raised his right fist to represent Black Power. Bronze medallist Carlos, wearing a bead necklace to symbolise the lynchings of black Americans, raised his left fist to represent black unity. The scarf stood for black pride and the socks with no shoes represented African-American poverty.
