The Joining of Quilts and Genealogy

The Oklahoma County Home and Community Education (OHCE) Genealogy Group is pleased to present a program that combines two of America’s favorite hobbies: Genealogy and Quilting. On Wednesday, February 18th, at 10:00 a.m. they will host member Beverly Kirk as she presents “Admiring Harriet Powers.”

Harriet Angeline Powers, an African-American quilter from the late 1800’s, poured her faith, experiences and community’s stories into her work. Only two of her quilts survive today: The Bible Quilt and the Pictorial Quilt. Yet, their impact is timeless. Whether you are a quilter, a lover of history, or someone who values the voice of trailblazing women, this lecture will inspire and connect you to an enduring creative legacy.

The speaker, Beverly Kirk, is a member of the Genealogy Group, the President of the OHCE Scissor Tales Quilt group and an active quilter and teacher of quilting.

The OHCE Genealogy group meets the third Wednesday of the month at the Oklahoma County Extension Center, 2500 NE 63rd St., OKC. Our purpose is to share our love of family history, genealogical research, local and national history and how those are part of our past, present and future.

Our meetings are open to the public and more information can be found on our Facebook page: OHCE Genealogy Group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1614399178772026/
