December 18th..... a day... a year.... a sister.
Today, I worked my way through mental and emotional uneasiness and finally settled my heart and mind.
A little after midnight, I realized something clearly.
Here’s what I know.
Here’s why I quilt—every day.
Quilting allows my mind to rest by fostering mindfulness and emotional expression. I am able to relax. Within each human that God has so wonderfully created is a parasympathetic nervous system—designed to help lower stress and restore balance. The rhythmic nature of sewing, the repetitive cutting, strip piecing, the angles of geometric shapes and basic squares, or the careful appliqué of a beautiful floral pattern allows my mind to rest as I meditative.
Always knowing God is near. He cares. He is good.
I've found an escape route—a far away place,,, far from the mental noise bouncing endlessly in my brain.
The feel of good cotton, silk, or minky fabric becomes a tangible and welcome refuge from life’s challenges. Texture matters. Touch matters. What I create today.... matters.
When I rise from a quilting session—no matter how long or how brief—I say to myself:
“It is well with my soul.”
And in this moment, I AM WELL.
