Contemplating Tuesday Quilt Notes

You can't always change things.  Sometimes you don't have no control over the way things go.  Hail ruins the crops or fire burns you out.  And then you're just given so much to work with in a life and you have to do the best you can with what you got.  That's what piecing is. 

The materials is passed on to you or is all you can afford to buy . . . that's just what's give to you.  Your fate.  But the way you put them together is your business.

This is my town ~ ~ ~ snow and ice, but SAFE!

A storm rolling out of the Four Corners region with snow, ice and rain is set to disrupt lives and travel from the southern Plains to the mid-South and the mid-Atlantic over the balance of the week. Enough snow or ice will fall along the Interstate 40 corridor that part of the major cross-country highway may shut down

The area from Amarillo to Oklahoma City will be the first to be hard-hit by the winter storm today. The next stops for the eastward-moving storm include Little Rock, Cape Girardeau, Memphis and Nashville by Friday.

Before the snow winds down on Friday, a foot of snow could be on the ground in Amarillo, Tulsa and Springfield, Mo. An inch of ice could accrue on trees and power lines in or near Oklahoma City.  For much of the southern Plains, the snow will follow a period of rain, sleet and freezing rain.

The combination of the snow, ice and in some cases plunging temperatures following the rain will make untreated roads and sidewalks extremely treacherous.  Where the freezing rain persists for an extended period of time, downed trees and utility lines will result in lengthy power outages. Winds gusting between 30 and 40 mph will add to this problem.The winds will also blow and drift the heavy snow around, further making travel hazardous

News Release.... happy to share the link!  "Connected by Threads" Event in Washington, DC


Asheville, North Carolina, Thursday, January 21, 2010 --The nonprofit Alliance for American Quilts will host two fundraising events in Washington, DC on Thursday, March 4.

The "Connected by Threads" events will celebrate quilts, quiltmakers and quilt history through the lens of two speakers, Dr. Carolyn L. Mazloomi and Le Rowell, both board members of The Alliance for American Quilts (AAQ). The events will benefit the nonprofit AAQ, a national organization that documents, preserves and shares the rich history of quilts and quiltmakers (www.AllianceforAmericanQuilts.org).

A Ship called COMFORT!

The Creole are heavily influenced by their descendants, the African American and West Indian culture and are successful traders and government officials.

The Creoles speak a distinctive creole language, called Krio, based on blend of English and African languages.


.....have 50 beds," said Lieutenant Commander Dan D'Aurora, the Division Officer for Casualty Receiving on the USNS Comfort. "We've got 12 operating rooms; we've got 20 recovery beds. We have 80 intensive care beds, 400 intermediate care and 500 minimal care."  A hospital that is now staffed by more than 550 medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, psychiatrists and a variety of surgeons. They boarded the ship in the port of Baltimore Friday evening, arriving there on short notice from across the United States. Now, they are cruising toward Haiti at speeds of up to 24 kilometers per hour.

Henry says he is proud to be in the U.S. Navy and he praised it for its quick response to help the people of Haiti. "Whichever, whatever job necessary that they want me to do, translate or work as a surgical tech or whatnot. I am here to do whatever necessary to help," he said.


Translators will be boarding the ship once it arrives in the vicinity of Haiti. The Comfort's director of nursing, Commander Mark Marino, told medical staff that translators will be available 24 hours each day. "But even then, 100 translators amongst possibly 800, 900, even 1,000 patients, rotating shifts is going to be a super challenge. Just be prepared for that as well. You may have to wait to do something until you can get a translator," she said.

Doctor Etienne says there are about 15 people of Haitian-descent aboard the Comfort. They have been gathering in the mornings to discuss ways to teach the staff about Haitian culture and history.

"When you are delivering medical care, one of the most important things is to have appropriate communication and understanding. And that is what we are trying to do right now," she said.

Each day, a Creole phrase is printed on the ship's schedule so the staff can introduce themselves and communicate with the patients they are dedicated to helping.

Dr. Carolyn L. Mazloomi just announced a call for entries into a juried exhibition titled "Beyond Category: Visions of Jazz in Fiber."
The show will be featured at the International Textile Biennial (San Jose, Costa Rica) and the University of Costa Rica (Limon) from September 7 to October 12, 2010.

If you would like your quilt(s) to be considered the eligibility and guidelines say each entry is by digital images only. You may submit up to 3 entries. Quilts must be created after 2008. Entries must be a minimum of 36" per side through a maximum 60" per side. Key Dates: July 1, 2010 deadline for entry and July 15, 2010 notification of acceptance.

When you submit your digital image(s), you are required to send: Artist's First Name, Last Name, full address including country, phone number, including country code, and your email address. Submit one overall DIGITAL image and one detail DIGITAL image for each piece of artwork. Send your digital images as a high quality JPEG or TIFF files. Finished image should be 1800 pixels on the longest side. Label each digital image with the name of your artwork title and indicate if detail or full. You must also include an artist's statement (25 words or less) with the piece's title, height x width, in inches, year completed, insurance value, materials and techniques (25 words or less).

Dr. Mazloomi will accept your entry on a CD or send via the internet. She says, "I will NOT ACCEPT entries without the artist name. Believe it or not, I receive many entries with no name attached."
